Over forty million Americans have a mental health condition. Women are twice as likely as men to be affected by anxiety, depression, and image dysphoria. The results of these conditions include substance abuse, eating disorders, chronic pain, and suicide. These photos represent the silent struggle that consumes various individuals on a daily basis. It is common for the people facing these disorders to be thought of as weak, but it is just the opposite: it is people asking for help so they can live to see another day. Inspired by the tragic loss of twenty-one-year-old musician Gustav Åhr aka “Lil Peep.”
Everyday women receive sexual harassment on social media. Often when the offender is shut down or ignored, they continue to provoke the female with sexual comments, hate slurs, and degrading sexist remarks. All of the screenshots in this piece are from the Reno, Carson City, Gardnerville, and Tahoe area. Contrary to common belief that the offenders are unemployed lowlifes; the men sending these messages have well paid jobs, attend the University, and are in highly thought of places in the community. Merging Roy Lichtenstein’s pop art with the Facebook messages can be interpreted iconic images with a modern twist.
